I think I know the answer
But with all due respect, I don't think you can call that company a failure.

But all that aside, Linux's and FSF's primary appeal is the fact that you don't have to reinvent the wheel. You take good code and make it better, or you build upon it. I don't see anything wrong with that.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the base of most existing Linux distros. The only thing they suffer is they have holes that need to be filled. Better multimedia, more structured configuration tools, better graphics programs, better programming tools (ones that attract Windows developers), those sort of things. You don't need to rebuild from the ground up to fix all that. In fact, a rebuild from the ground up would be a waste of resources. Resources that should be utilized to fix the real problems.
