AOL is scared
I believe they are in trouble of loosing a good portion of their customer base. I switched to Bellsouth in September of 2005 because I could get DSL light for about the same price as dial up on AOL. I didn't actually leave AOL until February. It took me that long to get unentangled as my kids in another state had an email address on my account. AOL gave me constant computer problems for years but I was just unable to make the switch without a lot of trouble and expense until recently. Once I switched, AOL comes up with this broadband service for $25.95 or something like that. They are loosing people left and right to the phone companies and cable companies in local areas. That is why they are blocking certain things from their customers emails, not just for profit (it still is in a way though)but to keep their customer base from being informed about what is out there. For years I used AOL only as an ISP and did not stay locked in to their little world. My kids however were lockees. I used Outlook Express and Outlook for email accounts that supported pop3 and never had a problem receiving emails. AOL users either choose to accept AOL's control or they are free to circumvent it. The bottom line is, if someone I send email to does not get it because they use AOL's "proprietary" email system, that's their problem, not mine.
