What they did was legal, but reprehensible
When you sign up with AOL, you agree to their terms and conditions which essentially say they can do anything they want with your email, including blocking it.

AOL is a commercial service, not a government entity. You use their equipment, their software, and their services for a price. You are guaranteed NOTHING, including privacy, reliability, or freedom of speech. If you don't like it, use another service. I do.
