You are talking about the software product here. Remember, the product has no revenue contribution to the open source business model. It is only the support that drives this business. I am talking about RedHat as a monopoly in the context of support. Red Hat has used guerilla marketing to enhance its branding (free publicity using media, technical community etc). When you think of support for open-source software, it gets the "first-to-mind" advantage. If your company decides to obtain JBoss, would you be comfortable getting support from RedHat or an obscure company like BlueHat? That is the power of marketing here. As a company RedHat is pretty business savvy... very much like Microsoft.
