Actually, MS and others *do* derive significant income from support. Ever tried calling MS? It'll cost you $25 per incident. And then too, the notion is that you can get your bugs fixed by upgrading to the next version.

No sir, you have it backwards. The closed-source model is all about shipping regularly to keep a continuous revenue stream going. That means shipping before "it's ready." Open source is all about providing continuous patches, updates, etc. whenever the community contributes them.
