So hypothetically they are similiar? Clearly they aren't
"Tomorrow Red Hat closes its service section to new business,
and offers the software at a slightly reduced price, described as
a reimbursement for obtaining service from another company."

You can get the RHEL (sans logos and trademarks) at centos.org
for zero charge. That's right the software if FREE!

Red Hat does not sell software, it sells services and support.
They are very good at it and this is what makes the subscription
worth the price.

Your hypothetical exists today - RHEL with services from another
company is available today as CentOS.

"I would say that sales would not diminish significantly. In fact,
eventually Red Hat will be able to drop the price discount. You?"

Sales would plummet if they stopped their services as this is
what you pay for with RHEL. If you don't want the services
offered by Red Hat why would you buy RHEL when the same
software is available from a number of source free of charge.

"If you're wondering why anyone would pay for a name, a brand,
consider that not everyone buys generic aspirin. Brands have
value."

I wasn't wondering. It makes perfect sense for Red Hat to buy
JBoss, however not for the reasons you're advocating.

JBoss has used the Red Hat model very successfully in the past.
Neither uses the MS model.
