Let's try a hypothetical situation.
Tomorrow Red Hat closes its service section to new business, and offers the software at a slightly reduced price, described as a reimbursement for obtaining service from another company.

I would say that sales would not diminish significantly. In fact, eventually Red Hat will be able to drop the price discount. You?



This is hypothetical because Red Hat won't do that for some time. The software stack will have to be completed first, for one thing. But in preparation, the quality of service will (continue to?) be less than perfect.

If you're wondering why anyone would pay for a name, a brand, consider that not everyone buys generic aspirin. Brands have value.
And companies have a defintion of "acceptable cost" which is greater than $0.

If SuSE declines precipitously, I might be pessimistic about how long Red Hat would wait.
