Not only that....

But I'd like to express a beef with Shoemaker's exaggerated opinion of how much execs contribute to the success of a company. He certainly fits into the mold of the "all-worthy" executive who believes they inspire the company and almost will it singlehandedly to success and profits. Then take millions in salary/bonuses/stock options/golden parachute, while those who do the real work and generate the workable ideas where the rubber meets the road, get hosed over for their efforts.

No, if anything, I think laying off in mass quantities is the problem, not the solution. It kills the morale of those left behind. Not to mention the loss of knowledge that goes out the door. Presumably the senior people get to stay...but then you get more of the same ideas, rather than bringing in new ones. If you're cash-rich, like Sun was/is, you don't lop off 1/3 of your workforce. Instead, get creative with them and get them working on new ideas and products. They will appreciate the notion that the company is showing them some loyalty rather than ditching them like a used paper plate just because a temporary downturn in the economy comes along...and this good morale will feed the idea engine in the grassroots ranks.

The correct solution to trimming your budget in hard times is to ditch several unneeded execs...you can cut payroll by the same millions, and only lose the knowledge of several, instead of hundreds...and half the time, that knowledge is out on the golf course anyway. My $.02.
