Sour Grapes and 20/20 hind sight
Shoemaker retired in July 2002, at the age of 59.
Sun hit the skids about about 2 years before.
Shoemaker was heading up Server development when
Sun went into the tank. Is he guilt-free here?
I think not.

I am sure that Shoemaker has (1) a tendency to think that the software guys are the problem (most hardware guys do), and (2) a huge ego. How easy it is for him to blame others from his easy chair.

Was Sun's investment in Java a waste? Hard to say, but it's easy to complain 4 years after you retire.

He criticizes Sun for letting Zander leave. McNealy and Zander are both known for having big
egos. People with big egos often don't get along with other big egos. "This company ain't big enough for the both of us".

What is the point of publicly criticizing your former employer? What is the gain? Absolutely
nothing except vindicating your self-image. I don't know the specifics of what went on in the offices of Sun from 1998 until 2002, but I'd bet the mortgage that there were a lot of meetings, a lot of yelling, and the decisions made were not the choice of Shoemaker.
