I have to dispute a couple of points
"Simple pride" is a wild assumption, but that's just a cheap shot...

"Way too easy... to get caught"? Hardly. In fact, I'd be stunned if they haven't already buried tens of thousands of lines of free code in their assorted OSes. They can't ever get caught doing so though, because nobody ever sees their code, only the compiled binaries, such being the nature of their proprietary business model.

Isofar as the "negative fallout", we're talking blip here. As much as we Linux users like our product, it's way to easy to get a little over-focused; to the public-at-large, Linux is Lucy's little brother and has a best friend named Charlie. Even if MS were caught, and publicly tried to the fullest extent, the court of public opinion would be bored away from the case by nature of the complexity of the issue that is its reality.

Lastly, MS has more money than they know what to do with; there is very little they can't afford.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed your post; I just happened to disagree with some of it.
