This is a republic, not a democracy...
... and it's normally the Republicans who are the first to hammer on that distinction. The idea of a constitutional republic is that the majority should not have the right to trample on the rights of the minority. Examples: the First Amendment, the 2nd Amendment, etc. But the current Republican Party is quite happy to allow majorities to trample on minorities in certain matters, such as gay marriage (how my neighbors getting married after 25 years together harms MY marriage of 25 years this June is a mystery to me). If the majority is "wrong" on a social issue the Republicans can get their nutjobs to the polls with, such as tougher drug laws or election law reform, then the majority be damned!
