global warming
1816 was known as the year without a summer after the volcanic island of Tambora exploded in 1815 putting enough dust in the air to block enough sunlight to keep temperatures low enough for snow in June in the northern hemisphere. The explosion of Krakatoa in 1880 wasn't as big, but it put enough dust in the air to cause spectacular sunsets for years. Mt. St. Helens was an even smaller explosion. One really big volcanic event like Tombara will cause sudden global cooling again.
