risc and epic are moot
epic is just a marketing scheme to try to justify an incompatible ISA. all chips have been risc for years. sure, the amd64 ISA is largely just an extension of the original 70's era 8086, but it's implemented using all the classic RISC techniques, and performs as a clean, from-scratch RISC of similar process/size would.

AMD knows it would be stupid to introduce an incompatible ISA, since the success of the K8 is excellent proof. there's no reason that plenty more mileage can't be gotten out of extensions to the AMD64 ISA. SMT, more FP/sse ops, smarter cache/prefetch, etc.
