ZZ, I think you are confused. There are two messengers in XP. One, Messenger is a service that allows net admins to send messages to clients. It is rarely used and if I am correct MS used a security patch to disable it on startup as a default. It can be started or stopped using the service manager facility. The second is Windows Messenger which is an instant messaging application that links through Passport servers to other instant messaging users. It does not start at windows startup, but can be made to do so by using the options menu item in the application. This application, by the way is the type of application referred to in this article.
