IM virii?
If "infected computers would not suffer poor performance or change their behavior in any way." as you say - what, exactly, would qualify this as a virus? You don't describe any kind of payload - and any kind of malicious code would take CPU cycles, and therefore directly affect performance. I use IM regularly - and have fallen prey to the hyperlink to spyware - much to my chagrin. But even this had a payload of some kind - did some kind of damage.

And the buddy lists are (usually) stored on a server - so couldn't the IM companies detect this vulnerability in their software and fix it at the server level? You would stop the "virus" cold.
