All of these companies similar to Gator (and there are a ton of them out there now) install this software to "unwitting" users. I'm not real sure how they sneak it in, but certainly, it's not that hard. And it very much reminds me of a virus the way it takes over the computer!
The last paragraph of the article says Gator does not feel responsible, "as long as the consumer gives us permission". Try to take away permission!!! I've even gone as far as calling (by telephone) their customer service department and asked for instructions on how to rid my computer of Gator - and guess what... I STILL HAD GATOR MONITORING AND PROVIDING POP-UP ADS!!!!
Somehow, one of my children "unwittingly" installed some software which now has my computer showing three to five pop-up ads every 5 minutes or so by some unidentifable ad company. I have searched the entire computer and removed all software which appears to have been "unwittingly" installed. Some of which I had to go to the software's website for instructions, only to find out the software was still not uninstalled.
I installed spyware killer software, as well as pop-up blocker. I am still getting over 100 popups in an 8 hour period - AND MY INTERNET EXPLORER IS NOT RUNNING!!!! (I have DSL, which means I have to disconnect the DSL service in order for it to stop).
We as consumers ought to be able to find some legal means to fight back against this scourge!
