I know, and you know, but does...
Robert I am not disagreeing with you that it's a pure PR move or that it in reality it's a pretty meaningless gesture. But then we are deeply involved with the tech and the issues behind it on a daily basis, Joe CEO however is not.

Joe CEO reads a blurp or two in the Wall Street Journal or another non-technical publication and assumes that where there is smoke there must be fire. It's a nagging question that has no clear answer because the "experts" are very divided over the issue. When that happens it creates F.U.D. in their minds.

I know that say Sun doesn't have their own distro, and yet they indemnify their customers. At least that is the PR claim. It costs them nothing to do it and Joe CEO likes the warm fuzzy feeling it brings. In a competitive world the "warm and fuzzies" are worth a great deal, especially if the other guy is afraid to do it.

On one hand you have Sun saying they will stand behind it and protect the customer, while the company being sued appears to be afraid to do so. I don't know about you but I can easily see that setting off warning bells to Joe CEO.
