Do I agree that HP's move was pure PR? Of course I do, in fact 99% of what comes out of tech companies is aimed at the PR target. But as we have agreed before, perception is everything. In this situation IBM is giving the preception that they are unwilling to take the risk and stand behind Linux. Maybe that is true, maybe it is not, maybe it's somewhere in between, but to Joe Customer, they are giving the wrong impression. This is truely a case where IBM could follow HP's (and Sun's) lead and say sure, we'll do it. As you say, it cost's them nothing either way. However after dealing with IBM more decades than I care to admit I can tell you one thing, for everything IBM does or does not do, there is a financial reason behind it...
