Not talking about passive backbone stuff
Of course Unix has bigger presence. It was the OS of acedemia and government when the original internet was developed and was lucky enough to get Grandfathered in as it grew. It's stable as backroom infrastructure. I won't argue that. we've used Unix for same thing but what a pain to maintain. We had 2 flavors and it was a nightmare to keep them both patched and that was before the internet virus era. Seriously. That is what concerns me over linux. Too many flavors(by the way, how can you lump all versions of linux into one pot to compare against MS? How is that fair? One should be discussing Red Hat vs. Novell vs. SUN vs....on and on?? They are all different derivitive OS's. And to think MS takes so many hits and jokes for being building "derivative" products. What a joke!! Linux is the biggest derivative of our time. I'm sure there is some critical thinker model surrounding this that makes it's derivitive nature not the same or bad like MS....of course. ). But I'm talking about machines humans interact with on a daily basis. Something used both by business and home users. Let's put it this way, name one other software company that matches up with Microsoft's revenues in the last 30 years? No, money is not everything but it's a benchmark for usage and presence.
