A good guess. I think RF and EM does account for a portion of it (1% might be a good number, or less). I do, however, think that the amount converted to heat is less than 99%.
Many of the ICs (logic, CPU, etc) are CMOS based, which means that charge is stored on a gate (simplistically) for a "1" and discharged for a "0." So, there are Coulombs being transfered from the voltage supply to gates and Coulombs transfered from the gates to the ground return with very little resistive losses (converting to heat).
Believe me, if a microprocessor were actually dissipating all of their 60W consumption as heat (or a motherboard's couple of hundred watts), it would take more than a little fan to keep it from burning up. - Posted by: neil ubich Posted on: 03/01/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
