PC Cooling
Cooling is a big problem in computing--roughly 99 percent of the power generated by PCs is converted to wasted heat, according to industry figures. Fans are one target for improvement.

For the life of me, I can't imagine what the other 1% is supposed to be. Computers don't do any physical work, so every microwatt that goes in should end up as "waste" heat one way or another.

As for improving the energy efficiency of computers, well -- the fans don't use more than a couple of watts total. The rest is the solid-state electronics, and I don't see improved fluid dynamics doing much on that front.
