((( "Republicans sneer at the "intellectual elite," vilifying the
intelligent while elevating the close-minded and mediocre."
I doubt it. More than likely, this is language used by talk radio
hosts, and not representative of our Republicans in Congress. )))
I did a Google search for "intellectual elite" and "speech." The top
hit is Ronald Reagan's speech "A Time For Choosing," otherwise
known as "The Speech." The Reagan years were the beginning of
this condemnation of the intellect by Republicans. The reason
for this is simple: Ronald Reagan could never be accused of
being an intellectual himself, so it was important for his party to
contrast this "rugged Everyman" with his opponent, Jimmy
Carter, the bookish nuclear physicist. Same is true for proud C-
student George W. Bush as he went up against Al Gore, who you
might recall was endlessly skewered for being a "policy wonk."
P.S. To my ZD-Net censors: clearly, you're the FOX News of the
technology sector (i.e. your Fair and Balanced (TM) Republican
puff piece, with no liberal dissent allowed.) I'll bet you take that
as a compliment. Rhetorical question: why are An_Axe_to_Grind
and jvenezia allowed to post their "Silly Libs" and "Left-wing yap"
comments, while mine was deleted? - Posted by: buddhistMonkey Posted on: 03/02/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
