RE: DVD to last 15 years
Was the 15 year comment from some marketing piece for DVDs?

>DVD was introduced around 1998 or 1999, or at least that's when it started gaining mass acceptance.

I believe DVDs were introduced in 1996, and while they didn't enjoy immediate widespread success (due to things like prohibitively priced players, etc.) by 1998 DVD players were available in the $300 range and started selling quite well.

>1999+[1]5 = 2014. It's only 2006. They said DVD was supposed to last at least that long, as long as the new system supposedly will.

If you're going to hold them to a time-frame, use the date they were introduced. DVDs have been out 10 years now. On top of that, have you read anywhere that DVDs are going away anytime soon? Seriously, the new fighting formats are not even finalized yet. Absolutely best-case scenario we'll see is high def DVD players being released at the end of this year for extremely high prices (get ready for $1000+ players) with very few titles released for the players. On top of that, have you seen the suggested pricing for movies on Bluray? Then you have to consider that the only people interested in these are goign to be the people who have extremely new HD setups in their home (my HD setup is almost 13 months old and it only includes DVI and component, so I won't be upgrading.) Very few people are going to jump on that. Even IF BR and HDDVD make it out this year, their own price restrictions aren't the only thing that will hold them back for a while. Before they can become mass-market general consumers are going to have to make a significant leap to current HD tech. They also have to battle it out first to see which standard (if either) will become the defacto standard. All of these issues mean neither BR nor HDDVD will enjoy mass-market penetration for at least another 4-5 years. Only then will you see support for current DVD start to decline, and they'll probably hang on for few years after that (I mean, afterall, new releases are still available on VHS!)
