... and have the scars to prove that I earned the privilege to complain if my country's government is rapidly becoming a totalitarian fascism.

Frankly, though, I don't think that this "right" needs to be earned by anyone. It is the duty and obligation of a citizen in a free society to speak up when the country's government makes a U-turn towards despotism.

In answer to your question: The price we citizens pay is the loss of our civil liberties which are what made this country the cultural and economic powerhouse it was. We also pay a cost in the the loss of the transparency of government process - which is absolutely critical to the functioning of an open and democratic republic (you know, the one you and I fought for).

As for my vote, I am happy with it. What I am unhappy with is how my candidate has acted since he got into office.
