It sounds like you haven't had you entire IT department laid off. You probably haven't had your company close shop and move over seas either.
Regardless of your talents and skills, you can be outsourced.
When entire projects/product lines implode...you can quickly find yourself out on the street.
But your over all message is correct. You need to always adapt...and never stop learning new technologies.
