Problem one or question one you pose is the hard one to answer, but there are alternatives, depending on location. If these are established in coastal regions, lack of wind is generally not an issue (I said generally...) but there is solar power with the augmentation of bio powered power plants, or even natural gas. This is a sticky one in that location and local laws will impact alternate power sources.

Bottom line is we can do this.

As for birds, there are several technologies, some high and some low that can be put in place to protect both equipment and wildlife.

1. FOD screens for one that are clearly visible.
2. Ultra-sonic warning devices that birds can hear as another.
3. Automated "scare crows" basically low tech robotics that have humanoid appearance that move.

I am sure I can come up with a few more.

Bottom line is wind power is viable and the threat to animals is not as great as many would like to believe. Skyscrapers pose a more serious threat than a windmill.
