Pen register
Most people don't know this, but law enforcement can get the names and addresses of anyone you get mail from pretty much by asking the Post Office to keep a pen register. They can't open your mail without a warrant, but if it's on the outside of the envelope, they don't need one. Just like they don't need a warrant to go through your trash.

This ruling is applying the same standard to email. And, no, don't count on the Supreme Court to come down on your side. Until people get wound around the axle enough to actually throw some bums out of elected office, nothing is going to change. Until privacy becomes an issue that wins elections, then PGP is your only friend.
