I think what fits the "big picture" better is that these cables are being broken purposely as a prelude to war. Also mentioned in the last week or so has been that "Israel can survive a nuclear attack better than Iran" and that "Israel has notified its citizens to prepare for rocket attacks", the fact Bush in now in the final year as POTUS and naturally all the saber-rattling before these. The timing is right.

By isolating Iran the US can assure that neither intelligence can enter to aid Iran and that news of an attack's impact (especially one that will likely escalate to a nuclear exchange) will never get out to the rest of the world. Controlling the media just like in Iraq and Afghanistan, but now also the internet "hole".

Intelligence gathering is certainly easier to accomplish at the land termini of these cables anyway.
