Delaying the Inevitable

Broadband providers, usually telephone or cable companies, are used to controlling everything in their networks including access, equipment and features. This is how they make money. But they know that the future is that of the "dumb network", where the intelligence is at the borders (customers and content providers) and not at the center (the network provider). They are simply doing whatever they can to delay the inevitable: the network becomes a utility, and connectivity to it becomes a commodity.
