"DRM is ... being used to extend the rights of copyright owners, and take away the rights of consumers."

That is the crux of the problem. DRM per se is an indispensable part of computer technology: it is the application of DRM to control access to content that irks users.

I imagine DRM will be a fundamental component of the video shop of the future - you will 'rent' a movie by getting a DRM controlled download to a device (USB key or similar). You will only be able to view the movie for the next 24 hours or whatever, whereupon it will be no longer available.

That type of DRM is fine, provided I have a choice of devices I can use it on (and not ones solely licenced from Sony or Microsoft or Disney). But trying to restrict that to a single proprietary device is just not going to work.
