Would have squelched much of the drama
if the search engines were invited to participate in an independent, non-government dictated study of their statistics with checks and measures on what info was disected and who retained such records beyond the stats supposedly sought by the govt. Here's your stats on such and such, you're not in need of personally identifiable info, and do a good job. Heck, we trust you, it's not like any branch of you delves into domestic spying or some weirdness like it.

Then again, maybe the gov's got some darpa patents to whip out as leverage. LOL.
