DRM is the cause of this
LOL in their zealous push to force the use of DRM and their lobbying of the DMCA, they have created the means to their own failure. Apple made it in portable music player and online music business first to their credit but their master stroke was to use the Fairplay DRM. It is not enough to piss of consumers who can wiggle around it, but it prevents any other company from making a compatible player of working with Itunes directly. Why? because Apple will not license it and it is illegal under DMCA to work around it. There is no Fair Use exception. This is the bitter irony of the DMCA's ability to crush fair use. They are now suffering as a result. How can you compete when the only way to do so means creating a whole separate market, a whole new product, and getting users to dump all the Fairplay protected content they already paid for. To be blunt it is an economic trap of their own making that they are only now realizing they have fallen into. May they reap what they have sown.
