What really concerns me...
?is that a group of largely uninformed would be do-gooders (I do think Christian fundamentalists believe they're doing the right thing) are leading our legislature by the nose down a frighteningly iso/insulationist path. America's past creative vibrancy was driven by our diversity, ethnic, racial, regional, etc., and sadly we've homogenized much of what drove that American ingenuity into a neutral grey flock of consumer sheep.

Any activity on the part of legislature to isolate the American public from the experiences of the rest of the world (read limiting access to information of any sort) should be viewed with skepticism and concern. No, I'm not a huge porn advocate, and frankly I think this issue goes beyond the hand cream crowd's first amendment rights. To me this issue is less about allowing American's free speech, but more importantly about allowing American's to have free unadulterated access to the rest of the world.

Today: Children (read: the American public at large) are restricted from porn.

Tomorrow: They're restricted from access to science that doesn't jibe with one group or another's views.

At the end of the day: American society as a whole no longer strives to build a better mousetrap, they just can't wait 'till it's available on the Home Shopping Network.

What drove the Renaissance? Among other things, access to information and people who wanted it.
