That's a myth
"The recoed industry felt like lack of quality in recording from this media reduced the threat of piracy"

The record companies felt that recording off radio was piracy. It went to courts and it was deemed fair use. The quality was never an issue. The record companies would much rather it be illegal to record songs off the radio. Since it's not the next best thing is digital music where they can try to enforce DRM to prevent you from actually being able to record music off radio. This way they get what they wanted.

Digital or analog make no differnce. The DAT case was not about being able to copy that cause it to fail. It was about cost. A dat tape record was super expensive and the media was 10 times the price of regular cassette. This is normal though with new technology. But by the time DAT was even begining to come down in price CD burners appeared killing DAT for the normal consumer. Notice how today every PC has CD burner and you copy CDs. The exact argument you make about DAT was never an issue with CD burners? That's just odd and make me believe the copying issues with DATs was not about about digital vs analog but about copying in general. DAT was killed before the issue was ever an issue. CD continued on that course and we got the CD levie to cover cost of piracy.
