Solved problems.
Part of the reason that the public response to restriction has not been as disapproving as you hope is that the public is able to use a distribution system that gives them what they want as they want it.

I refer, of course, to piracy.

This "crime" began as a response to the refusal of the content companies to use the internet, even though its potential was obvious. The software came from anti-establishment problem solvers in our midst, and it has obviously stayed ahead of the highly paid attempts to stop it.

So everyone is happy.

The file sharers get their music, even buy CDs when they've confirmed something is worth buying.

The content companies get the laws and legal decisions that will keep them from ever having to worry about independent competition. (How easy will life be for non-RIAA distributors with DRM on every new electronic device?)
They have encroached on every protection the consumer has gained for years.

The laws and Court decisions the content companies have obtained will long outlast file sharing. The bad guys are content.

And the file sharers are convinced they're not doing anything wrong (the only bad outcome is to be among the few getting caught), and they're getting what they want.
That's the way life is supposed to be, no?!

The rest of us are caught in the middle, losing without benefit. But then it's our job to pay the money that keeps the system rolling, and, given the size of the entertainment industry, we're prepared to do that.

And if we did revolt, we help the content companies legally and hurt the people who produce the music because as the content company resources diminish, the best musicians (as opposed to those only marketed to be popular)suffer most.

We'll have to outlast 'em.
