Although they bought that law. There was an interview with the bills sponsor and he admits that the entire AHRA bill was written by lobyist.
A lot of this will depend on how far they push this. What is really sick is this;
Sales last year were down another 25% but piracy was down also but digital downloads were up to record highs.
Also another point: They have gotten nearly all the torrent hubs that were hosting ilegal content shut down, they have paid companies to poisen the p2p networks so that seraching them turns up junk that they themselves have placed there on most tries, and all the ilegal FTP and Websites that had ilegal sounds are just about a thing in the past.
At what point do they start owning up to the fact that the losses are not due to piracy?
I mean sales are down but one of the biggest reasons they are down is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart sells the popular CDs at price points of $7.50, $11.50, and $14.50. Also they limit the selections by not carring back-catalog of most bands, which tend to sell better, and by limiting the selections to top 40 bands- so many bands and CDs are not available at Wal-Mart... In Fact everytime I have walked into Wal-Mart to perhaps Purchase a Music CD I get disgusted (It also doesn't help that I am boycotting the RIAA bands and refuse to purchase from any RIAA bands and use http://www.magnetbox.com/riaa/ to check my potential purchases- but regardless of that, in the last 5 years I have seen exactly 1 CD that I would even be intrested in purchusing from Wal-Mart).
Another reason for the drop in sales is improvements in inventory systems. The stores do not shelve anything more than they cang get away with. There will be b 1-4 copies of a title on the shelve and when it is sold using the new computerized RTIS (Real Time Inventory System-Another Wal-Mart invention) will order the replacement at the end of the day.
Yet anbother reason why Cd sales are down is that DVD and Game prices have come down. At Wal-Mart you can purchase special 2-pAcks of popular PC Games for 10 or 5 packs for $20. Wal Mart sells DVDs at price points of $1 (In the PD or Near PD 25 titles for 1 dollar box towards the front of the store), $5.50 (Older titles from the 80's and 90's), 2 for 11 (for titles within the last decade), and 15.00-20.00 for the most popular new releases.
Comparitivly DVDs and games offer more entertinment value for the money in most peoples minds. Also consider Dollar General and Value City sell DVDs at price points of 1, 3, and 5 dollars per DVD of close out titles.
Another point is that the sales in the 90's were not sustainable. A lot of the sales were from people converting Cassets to CDs. Now that people have purchased all the back catalog of CDs they won't continue purchasing. A lot of movie purchases were from people converting VHS to DVD and those sales are dwindling now also.
The general quality of the new music is why dowsn. This is in large part becuase the labels have been using computer models to predict if the song will be a hit or not, hence whether or not to publish it, so the bands all sound about the same now. It also doesn't help that a lot of bands are manufactured also.
The RIAA titles are under boycott and have been for several years- due to there actions such as suing little girls, old ladies (Wrongfully), and others for file sharing- they are also under boycott becuase they are pushing DRM, some of which even damages our computers, while at the same time being convicted of price fixing at the same time coming up with very unfair and onesided contracts to the artist and even "forgetting" to pay the meager royalties the artist are owed. There are databases online that show you which bands are RIAA or Which titles have DRM.
Studies also show that many consumers are also steering clear of DRM titles now and the labels are pushing DRM (Hence sales go down).
Finaly gas prices and rising health care costs (Insurance, doctor visits, and Pharmacutics) have reduced the amount of disposable income that people have. CDs are luxury items. If someone can't afford basics they probably will not purchase music.
Nobody at the RIAA wants to talk about that though- Its always about the piracy... NOT!
Finaly the real pirates, the crooks who are selling knock off CDs from the back of their cars , in street corner of [Insert Name of Non-US/Canadian, EC City],or in that back booth of the flea market are exactly that -Criminals. They don't care about the law or copy protection becuse they are criminals to begin with and choose to bootleg materials for a profit and will break any copy protection placed on the device anyways. - Posted by: Edward Meyers Posted on: 01/14/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
