RIAA wants back control lost to TAPE
They want to put the genie back in the box. In its day a high quality analog radio with a good receiver was pretty high quality when recorded. These morons want to pretend that now things have really changed because its all digital now. Nothing has really changed except that their product has been made into a cheap commodity. The lossy copy arguments about why it is not the same do not hold water either. The CD has been around for a decade now so making a one generation analog copy that is never going to get any worse is not much different than recording what comes down a satellite and re-encoding it. The quality is not even the issue. They were mortified when the courts let tape decks and VCRs make copies. What they want is to be able to charge for any and every use. I go back to a concept I have said before. If they want to use the privilege of broadcasting to us via our air space and into our houses they must give us the right to make a time shifted copy. That is nothing like allowing us to put it on P2P. The reality is their product have lost most of their real value and now they want to create artificial value for them. Think about it satellites radio cost maybe 15 a month. Songs are now 99 cents. In all the US how many really buy that many songs a month? I am sure for every 1 there are 10 who do not. Shoot, even if they start selling free ad supported digital radio the numbers are the still the same just the source of the revenue has changed. We have already paid for those songs and in some cases many fold. Let them take a small amount from the vedors and leave our rights alone. I do not want every device in my world changed so that these pathetic excuses for a companies can have the special right to make as much money as they choose. When sugar stopped being an exotic spice and became a staple it value went down. So goes radio. Last I checked big sugar was doing fine so will they. They just need to clean house a bit. No more multi millionaire shallow artists and mafia alike money moguls, just hard work and good art. As it should be.
