Going to theater is about the experience
The theatre is not about seeing the movie there first. It's about going out to see a movie in a differnt format than watching it on your TV. There is no competition between the theater and buy/renting DVDs. To think this way is a mistake and loss of potential revenue.

Imagine a theatre that not only played the movie but had the DVD for sale right in the theatre. You go see a movie on the Big Screen for the experience and you like the movie so you buy it on the way out(assuming the movie is not priced like popcorn).

I go to a movie to experience the big screen or just to get out of the house for while. A movie in theatres also allows a break from the kids for a few hours and allow you to have the full sound on a movie that is not appporpriate for youngsters.

If you're younger the movie going experience is dating activity or cultural activity that goes to youth culture.

Ever hear the expresion during movie previews of "Oh that's a rental". That's a movie that doesn't have anything to warrant seeing it on big screen for the price they charge.

Also there a lot of people out there that can't go to the theatre. Maybe they don't live close enough to one such a rural areas or they have kids and no babysitter. Excluding them is loss as many movies don't get hyped again during DVD release and they get lost in the shuffle

Windowing the releases is what cause a loss in revenue and increases piracy.
