MAC users and their delusional perspectives
Um, MAC may be the 5th largest PC maker now, and as I recall it's always been in the top 5 and definitely the top 10, BUT THAT'S ONLY when you compare COMPANIES, NOT PLATFORMS.

A proper, and ACCURATE comparison would be a comparison of PCs running Windows vs. PCs running Mac OS vs. PCs using other Unix and of cours PCs using Linux.

When one makes the comparison between PCs using Windows (all flavors) vs. PCs using Mac OS (all versions) Windows is somewhere in the 80-90%.

So yes it's QUITE ACCURATE to call MAC a NICHE player, even with the TREMENDOUS increase in it's percentage of the PC market up to 3.7% (from 3.0%) A 3.7% share is definitely "niche" when comparted to a platform that has an 80-90% share as windows PCs do.

Macs are great if you think like Steve Jobs. I use both and to me it's just another computer that does the same as any other computer with a slightly different logic to its command structure and different looking GUI. These differences just never justified the premium price.

I'm a musician and a professional graphic designer by the way. So I am one of the people who should be a machead. To me it's just a computer no better or worse than a Windows based PC. Both require taking time to learn.

Mac users who switched seemingly forget that using a windows PC did teach them something. This "something" is a big part of what makes using a MAC the first time seem easy. You did the hard learning of computer jargon and computer functionality on a Windows PC. You figured out what a hard drive is, or how RAM, folders, saving, deleting, menus are used using Windows. So it's common sense that when you go to a MAC it will seem easier, better, because you are starting much further along in the understanding and learning process. People also tend to "shed" misconceptions when making such switches. Switching to a Mac is similar to starting over with a clean slate, but this time you come equipped with a lot of knowledge of PCs in general, totally the opposite of how you started with a Windows PC.

All in All sometimes that is what it takes for certain people to "get" a computer. That is good enough, and makes it worth it for the professional artist. I'm just lucky I didn't need it. It saved me thousands upon thousands of $ not just for PCs but for software. wink
