The market has power
I'm all for making people happy with music, but I've been able to
fill that activity with lots of non-RIAA music (or at the very least,
by finding used copies of RIAA cds, so my money is not heading
to the tyrants).

---True, it's a vicious cycle, but this war will not be won in the
marketplace. It's outcome will be decided in a courtroom
(actually several) over many, many years.---

I think the market is where it will be decided. DRM is generally
legal (aside from Sony's recent efforts, and the fairly illegal
contract the Coldplay cd attempts to enforce). Congress is
heavily influenced by donations from media companies. The
laws are going to be on their side. The only recourse we have,
the only way to slow this down, is simply not to purchase the
products. The RIAA/MPAA can rant and rave all they want about
piracy, but if no one is buying their products, they'll eventually
give up on the DRM, rather than go out of business.

The other real advance we'll see is artists realizing they no
longer need to sign to a label. Many of this year's top acts are
new bands that aren't signed (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah as an
example). They've been able to handle the whole thing
themselves, with the hiring of a distributor, and they get to keep
all the money they make from cd sales, rather than giving it all
to an RIAA company for no reason. Expect this to become more
and more the norm, and for the RIAA companies to end up being
glorified distribution and PR companies. They will no longer
have the ability to make decisions like this, to include
consumer-unfriendly DRM in the products. That will be up to
the individual artist, and will certainly color their relationship
with their fans.
