Thanks tic and buddhistMonkey
I wonder if those figures are based on harddrive models of media players though which I would think, due to their cost, only make up a fraction of the total media player market.

The NPD Group, a research analysis firm, said that all models of the iPod accounted for 92.1 percent of the market for hard drive-based music players, up from 82.2 percent a year ago

This one suggests that Apple's overall marketshare is more around 60% and falling which, to be honest, still surprised me since that is still a huge number.

contributing to a fall of Apple's share of the overall market for all music players from 65.8% to 58.6%

I wonder if that takes into account all the PocketPCs that double as music players, as mine does. Since tic's original assertion was that MS's music store wouldn't be compatible with 80% of the players out there, we can't discard PocketPCs although admitedly, they probably don't account to a large % of the overall music player market.

Hmm, interesting how, at the same time MS is forced, by the EU, to sell versions of Windows without any media, it turns out that Apple is actually the one with the near monopoly on it! Maybe Real should have been suing Apple for bundling MacOS with iTunes instead of MS for their pitiful little Media Player? Just shows how irrational people, even judges and other corporations, get when it comes to MS.
