This is a basic misunderstanding of how Linux works. The different distros aren't incompatible. There's nothing that keeps your stuff from working with "his stuff". Even the difference between apt-get and RPM is trivial, since you can install either, or both, on your system. In other words, the different Linux distros aren't as different as Windows and Linux. They're more the difference between, say, two Ford Mustangs with different options packages.
