Misplaced blame
You cannot blame "people of faith" for lack of a diabetes cure. Period. First, embryonic stem cells (its clear you are referring to religious opposition to this) have not been able to cure any disease yet. Adult stem cells have already done so for a variety of diseases and conditions. Secondly, there are groups and individuals who have pushed ahead with this controversial research despite opposition, and have not reached its supposed promise. I'm well aware of the minutiae of what is going on in this field, having several friends who are PhDs in biology and some who work on non-human cloning - here in the epicenter of stem cell research (Madison, WI - where the originator of it all, James Thomson, is from and currently still working on it). They are needless to say, very knowledgeable on the topic and have close contact with what Thomson is up to and what the latest developments are. Most recently, Thomson and co. have been able to grow embryonic cell lines in substrates not containing animal proteins. This will supposedly help the issues with tumors and inappropriate differentiation that are experience with embryonic stem cell treatments. These issues do not exist for adult stem cells, however, so this is in fact playing catch-up. It is really beyond me why such smart scientists insist that embryonic cells are needed for this research and treatments, given the promise of adult cells without the complications.

Back to the "savings and burden on society/family" issue: the reason that social security is collapsing is specifically because people are not having enough children. The population is barely at a replacement rate, and with the boomers retiring, the younger generation is, in fact, underpopulated. Why would we rather have government care for us, than our children?
