Worth mentioning a change in accounting rules.
Back in the 1990s when the tech bubble was making pension funds look overstocked, companies were able to bring the excess to their bottom lines. The CEOs received large bonuses for the fake profitability that showed their great management skills.

Now the loophole has been closed and CEOs make nothing from the pension funds while the underfunding has become glaringly obvious because the fake money has disappeared.

Defined benefit retirement will disappear as yet one more result of feeding the CEO and a few of his closest friends.
