Why shouldn't the RIAA companies tell the truth...

Music executives have said they want to be able to respond to market forces with more flexibility, such as charging more than 99 cents for top singles, or less for slow-moving older songs.

Similar statements have been reported.

I'm most familiar with classical CDs, and prices at a retailer like Borders can go as low as $7.99, even lower on sale, for some reissues or minor, older recordings.

So the content companies' plans don't seem entirely unlikely.


Worth noting that the announcement of a pricing policy by a single company can be read by the other companies and used as a reference.

Collusion is not an especially easy crime to prosecute.
