I think you're giving the RIAA folks way too much credit and
business sense here. Given that they charge vastly more for a back
catalogue cd than they charge for a new hit release it would seem
to completely contradict their business model for selling music in
physical form.

But I'll bet you, if they can finagle sliding scale pricing, the vast
majority of songs will be 99 cents and above. They've already said
that they think they're way underpriced right now.
