True, a company like WalMart can afford to undercut Apple, at least for a while. And remember when Real offered $0.49 per download as an introductory offer?

But if an Apple competitor had variable retail prices while Apple remained at $0.99 per song, the competitor would be harmed for charging more for a popular song.
Not easy getting customers away from Apple, which had 70% of the market last I heard, and finding that every popular song cost less on Apple would end hope.

This is not collusion; it's normal behavior with a strong industry leader.

The point of my post is that the content companies are already implementing variable pricing to the retailers. And the retailers cannot pass the price differences to customers because Apple stands in the way.

You're right; the companies may approve the current fixed rate system. But even if they wanted to change, and financial pressures from the content companies make such an intent reasonable, they still could not.
