Variable pricing - how novel
Despite our being mesmerized with the iTunes model, the 99 cent "standard" was a Helen Keller dart on the wall. The real issue with the labels is greed, as Jobs so clearly mentions. Until the labels understand that a tiered, quality driven pricing model strengthens their market top to bottom, the free-for-me p2p folks will continue to make RIAA's lawyers rich. The Russians are doing it right - www.allofmp3.com has a great model that should be the reference. MP3 encoding for your little flash running device, CD-DA for the 2 channel reference setup in your living room, and a pricetag to reflect the value in each. Get with the program people.
