My gawd, the paperwork will drown a business

I don't know the actaul number but there must be at least 5000 - 10000 different tax rates in different locations around the US. How is anyone going to deal with:

A: Obtaining a tax permit for each

B: Calculate taxes to be collected

C: Write out a check every month to each of them (or a form saying none is owed that month)

Assuming 5000 taxing bodies that comes out to something like 1700 checks or forms every single day!!!

Just let software do it you say. Nice idea but you can be certain these rates change constantly and you would need to update the data every single day. Of course even if your computer prints out the checks and forms you are still looking at around $600 a day in postage and time to mail it off. And Gawd forbid you ever get audited!!!

Then there is also the fact that many would simply move their "point of sale" offshore. Folks, setting up a server in another country is NOT a big deal. Nor is partnering with a non-US company hard to do at all. In fact if this were to happen I suspect you will see a rash of new companies in offshore locations spring up to partner with US retailers for say 1% of the gross sale.

The net effect of this is draining dollars from the US economy and a loss in tax revenue, not a gain!!! Toss in the loss of jobs (web site designers, accountants, etc.) as a little "side benefit".

We see already how US corporations avoid US taxes by offshoring, are we now going to force every single retailer to do the same thing???

Congress needs to pull it's head out...
