It will work if "stamps" can be re-used...
We need to add digital postage stamps to every email sent. I can then reject all mail based on whether it has a stamp attached or not.

As for cost...if I can re-use the stamps from the mail sent to me then it will cost me very little to send email. I?m also very sure that a whole new industry will spring up to give away "stamps" in promotions or as a reward for watching adverts.

Mailing lists can ask you to return stamps to them if you wish to continue your subscription.

The only people who will pay will be those who want to send far more mail than they recieve, and have no hope of getting ther stamps back, ie. spammers.

All we need to do to achieve this is to upgrade our mail readers to check incoming mail for valid stamps. The existing mail servers and protocols can stay exactly as they are. If you don't upgrade then that's ok, but expect your friends to nag you until you do...!

Microsoft could kill spam dead almost overnight with a service pack for Windows and an upgrade to Hotmail. Are you listening, Bill?
